Introducing Amplify Reading!

Did you know that we have a new reading program at the OJCS this year?  The kids in SK have begun to explore Amplify Reading (or Boost as they know it) over the last month and we thought we’d share some important information (thanks Mrs. Reichstein and Mrs. Thompson!) about how we are using it at school and how you can use it at home as well…

What is Amplify Reading?

Amplify is the new reading platform (the umbrella company) that the OJCS purchased licences for this year to use as a pilot project to enhance our current reading programs. We bought three programs for our school through Amplify, each explained below.

1. mClass – DIBELS 8 Assessment

2. Boost Reading

3. Boost Close Reading

Why did we choose Amplify?

It is the platform that most closely aligns with the evidence-based body of research referred to as the ‘Science of Reading’. The Science of Reading research shows the need for students to have word recognition skills (such as phonemic awareness, decoding skills through phonics, and reading fluency) and language comprehension (including knowledge of vocabulary, morphology, and syntax) in order to read and comprehend text.

1. mClass is the system that allows us to run the DIBELS 8 Assessment with all of our students in Grades K-3.

What is DIBELS?

DIBELS ® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures that can be used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. In SK, the DIBELS 8 assesses different skills such as, Phonemic Awareness, Sound Isolation, Decoding, and Word Reading. These results help us identify who is below, at, or above grade level in each skill and then target instruction (i.e. with small groups, resource support, etc.) accordingly. This is an assessment that is completed in class with the teacher and it should also be noted that the DIBELS assessments are all timed tasks.

2. Boost Reading is the reading program licence we purchased for our students K-5. Boost Reading is a literacy acceleration and remediation program that uses adaptive technology to deliver personalized learning instruction for K–5 students. The engaging world of Boost Reading adapts to each unique reader. Boost Reading was authored with experts in literacy, cognitive science, learning, and instruction. It builds on well-established principles of effective instructional design and delivery, as well as new and cutting-edge research on how students learn to read.

Can my child use this program at home?

Yes, please!!! We will be sending a handout with your child’s log-in information (in your child’s Note Tote) home today!!  Get your child set up to use Boost Reading at home by making sure they have a set of headphones and a quiet place to play. Boost Reading is personalized to your child’s needs, so you don’t need to and you should NOT assist them with their learning. Once they log in, they’re ready to start using the program. Some students will begin with a placement activity that helps the program match them to the best content. To ensure the most accurate placement, it’s important that students complete each activity independently. It’s always helpful to encourage your student/child to have fun and do their best!

3. Boost Close Reading is the reading program licence we purchased for our students in Grades 6-8.  You will receive more information about this as your child approaches those grades.

What will I see as a parent on report cards?

For K-5 students, on the report card, teachers will share how a student is performing in various strands related to reading, including letter names and sounds, decoding and fluency. With data from the DIBELS assessment, the report cards will indicate whether the student is performing above grade, at grade or below grade level in each specific skill assessed. They will also share next steps to target skills that are still developing.

Any questions?? Please feel free to reach out to Morah Andréa.  Perhaps you can take some time over the winter break to try this out at home!!

Highlights of the Week in SK

It’s been a wonderfully busy week in SK.  Here are some highlights of the week and some important reminders of upcoming events…

Both classes had their first meetings with their Grade 5 Reading Buddies this week!! Each child is paired with one or two Grade 5 students and every few weeks, we will meet in the library to read together, get to know each other, and to participate in some fun, community-building activities.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you about their new buddies!!

This week has been all about a favourite fall food, APPLES!!!  SK has learned about the Life Cycle of an apple, participated in a variety of apple math activities and we even did an apple taste test, comparing how 3 different kinds of apples look, smell, and taste, and of course choosing which one was our favourites; then we put the results in a graph.  The favourite in SK-A was Golden Delicious and the favourite in SK-B was Red Delicious.  They have also been talking about les pommes en francais…. Madame Maryse will share more about that later.

Today, JK and SK participated in a special Tashlich ceremony in preparation for Yom Kippur.  We gathered in the front yard, read the story “Tashlich at Turtle Rock”, and then each child drew a picture of something they wanted to throw away from this past year.  Then they balled up their drawings and threw them into the water to enter the New Year with a clean slate.  Thank you to Morah Susan and Morah Jaqui for organizing this meaningful activity.

In case you missed it, the video of our SK Back to School Night presentation and the slideshow are now uploaded to the “Back to School Night Videos” tab at the top of the Blog’s main page (and linked here for easy access now)…. Apologies that Morah Jaqui’s section is not in the video, but you can review the slides provided and send any questions you may have her way.  Thanks to everyone who was able to join us.  Once again, if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to any of us!!

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

Monday, Sept. 25 – Yom Kippur (NO SCHOOL)

Tuesday, Sept. 26 – OJCS Terry Fox Run

Reading Buddies has begun… and some other important info

Today, SK got to participate in an OJCS tradition from pre-COVID times – we had our first meeting with our Grade 5 Reading Buddies!!  Each child is paired with one or two Grade 5 students and every two weeks, we will meet in the library to read together (in English & Hebrew!!), get to know each other, and to participate in some fun, community-building activities.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you about their time in the library today!!

Starting next week, we will be returning to another pre-COVID tradition of asking our SK families to provide challah for our weekly Shabbat celebrations.  As part of our weekly classroom jobs, we have a Chazan or Chazanit Hashavuah who helps lead the tefillot and our Kabbalat Shabbat.  We will be asking that each child bring a challah on their assigned Friday to share with their friends.  You will receive an email from Morah Andréa on the Monday before your child’s designated Shabbat.  In order to follow the school’s kashrut policy, the challah must be kosher, sealed with a hechsher and nut-free.  We recommend the challot from Loblaws College Square, Metro on Greenbank, or any Farmboy location.  Ordering from A Dashing Pinch or Creative Kosher are also welcomed options.

If you have any questions or concerns….

On International Dot Day, SK Made Their Mark

On September 15, 2022, the kids in SK celebrated International Dot Day!!!  If you’re not sure what International Dot Day is all about, here’s a little explanation:

September 15th marks the anniversary of the publication of best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds’ The Dot, a “story book for all ages.”

Starting in 2009, a group of educators began celebrating this date as International Dot Day — a day for classes to explore the story’s powerful themes: bravery, creativity, and self-expression.

The Dot tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Peter’s book, the teacher dares a very resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Encouraged by her teacher she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, letting her creativity bloom and, ultimately, inspire others.

from The Educator’s Handbook for International Dot Day

To mark this special day yesterday, after reading the book, the kids got to explore their own creativity by making their own unique dot.  They experimented with colour mixing by using markers on coffee filters and then spraying them with water at the Saturation Station.  They also drew their own special masterpieces to make their mark.  We listened to and watched a video of the “The Dot Song” written by Emily Arrow and Peter H. Reynolds…. you can watch the video and do the actions at home here.

The school year may have just begun, but the kids in Senior Kindergarten have already made their mark in a big way!!  Check out the pictures below and then keep scrolling for some important upcoming dates!!!

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – Back to School Night at 7:00 pm (in person!!)

Friday, Sept. 23 – OJCS Terry Fox Run

Monday, Sept. 26 & Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Rosh Hashanah (NO SCHOOL)

This week and Next.. So much!

What a great busy week in Kindergarten! On Tuesday we had a an author visit via Skype from Chana Stiefel. Thanks to Staci Kenter for helping to organize this for the children. We had the opportunity to read her book in class as well as listen to Chana herself read it to us. The book she read  is called -My name is Wakawakaloch!

I’ve added a few pics to show some of the word work and writing activities that happens. Some children have begun to do research on different Sea Creatures as we we continue our Under the Sea Inquiry.

Today the class created their Projects for Innovation Day. We were very excited to use The Makerspace in our school for the very first time. If you can drop by tomorrow at 8:45 to see what we made for The Three little Pigs houses we can share our houses and how we built them.

For Ruach week,  Wednesday is Class Theme Day. Our class chose the theme of Disney Characters. As you can see there are so many choices! As well ,for Friday, Pyjama Day, we will be donating pyjamas to children who are in need, so if you can, please bring in a child’s new pair of pajamas that would be greatly appreciated.! On Tuesday, we will be attending the Ganon’s Purim Carnival .

Looks like a really fun week ahead!

Welcome to January 2020!

Welcome Back Everyone! We hope you all had a relaxing and great winter break. We wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New year!

Blasting off into Space!

The Kindergarten Class has begun to learn all about The Solar System. We created an I Wonder chart to see what we want to know and what we wonder about.

The students really enjoy this song about the Solar System! Click the link below if you’d like to listen at home.

In addition to the above,  in the computer lab,we are working on our reading skills using the website Starfall.
Feel free to access this website using the link below to explore Starfall from your own homes/devices.

This year for my Professional Growth Plan in Kindergarten  I am exploring how to use Flipgrid as a Platform for Homework  in Kindergarten. FlipGrid is a really great tool where you can create videos around a question or a topic. Flipgrid is a very Kinder Friendly Technology Tool  to use.

Our first step will be to learn how to use Flipgrid in the class. Once we are comfortable with the process, we can begin to use it for homework at home.

I have begun the process by meeting with our Technology Specialist Teacher, Melissa Thompson, and I am becoming familiar with how to set up a classroom with our own passwords, etc.

One of the ways I plan to use Flipgrid in the coming month is by having the students upload a review of a book they have read at home (with your support)  by answering a few basic questions on the Flipgrid.

As we become more comfortable using Flipgrid at home,  I hope to use it for Math Problem Solving Questions.

I look forward to having your feedback on my new journey so that we can make this an exciting and meaningful way to have our learning from our classroom to our home come together. As we all know one of our North Stars is We learn better Together.
