Introducing IXL

IXL Online Math Forum

IXL is an online forum that provides diagnostics of learning skills, promotes review, mastery and extensions of skills through practice, as well as providing students, teachers, and parents valuable information on student’s progress through grade data points. We have just introduced IXL in the classroom and there will be a handout in your child’s backpack today that explains how to log in with your child’s login and password; if you need a reminder or have not received the handout, please contact Morah Andrea. The program can be accessed through either the link above or by downloading the app for Apple or Android products, though it tends to work better through the website.

We will continue to use this program in class, but practice time at home is also encouraged! However, please ensure that your child is working on this as independently as possible. If a teacher or parent helps out, especially during the Diagnostic process, the recommendations and next steps will be biased and not as authentic for the students to monitor their own growth, be confident in their abilities as well as provide authentic feedback to the teacher on his or her personalized math journey. This Friday, Dec. 17th is a special Pyjama Dress Down Day for the ALS Society of Canada as chosen by Grade 6…. Don’t forget to bring a loonie or toonie for tzedakah!!

Dismissal this Friday is at 2:00 pm.

Don’t forget to let us know if you need to pick up your Rapid Antigen Testing kit before we send them home on Friday. We hope everyone has a wonderful winter break and we look forward to seeing you all back at school on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Practicing Patterns!

For the past couple of weeks, SK has been exploring patterns. In fact, they have been so busy practicing finding the core of a pattern as well as copying, creating and extending patterns using different materials and manipulatives, that I didn’t get any pictures ;( But you can check out your child’s Pattern Book that was sent home today and ask them to tell you what each pattern is. We also did a Pattern Scavenger Hunt, so you may want to encourage your child to find as many patterns as they can at your house or as you are out and about this weekend!

They also practiced patterning on IXL which they can continue to do at home! Once your child is logged in, click on the Teacher Recommendations tab and find the various pattern activities I have assigned them. We also played Fuzzbug Patterns as a class, so I’ve linked it here if they would like to play it at home as well!!

SK Summer Review

You thought you were done hearing from me, didn’t you?? Here’s one last post before I sign off for the summer…

When you receive your child’s report card, you may notice some suggestions and next steps to ensure your child is prepared for the start of Grade 1 in September. I’ve collected some ideas and resources that you and your child can access through the summer to avoid the “summer slide”. All of these are absolutely optional, but they are here should you wish to use them.

Clear the Board – Summer Edition: Uses this fun bingo board to read in a variety of ways throughout the summer.

Teach Your Monster to Read This app is available for purchase on the App store ($6.99), and you can also download a desktop version that is free, though there may be some differences in the program. We used this app in class and the kids absolutely love it!! It covers everything from letters and their sounds to reading full sentences and short stories.

Kids Learn! Sight Words This app is designed for iPads and is available for free on the App store, though there are additions available for purchase. It combines fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension practice with entertaining, engaging graphics in a fun learning format.

Spelling Games for Kids This app is designed for iPads or iPhones and is available for free in the App store. It helps to hone your child’s spelling skills through a variety of games that feature over 900 words.

MATH

IXL – You can go back to this blog post in case your child has not already been accessing IXL at home. They can continue working through the Teacher Suggested Skills or they can access the Diagnostic Arena to tailor activities to their skill level. As a reminder, here is how to login:

MathGames.com – This site has a lot of free options without having to sign up (though that could be an option as well) that can be divided up by grade level or by skills.

Find and draw all of the beautiful plants you find this summer in this Plant Observation Journal.

HEBREW

My Jewish Games.com has some fun free games to practice vocabulary.

Here is a Padlet that has a variety of Hebrew stories that kids can listen to and if you can read Hebrew, there are some activity suggestions under each story as well.

Kindergarten App Recap

During Parent-Teacher conferences last week, we had a lot of questions about the apps and online programs we are using in class as well as the ones that could be used at home. We thought it would be helpful to give you a recap of all of these programs, how your child might be able to use them at home, and how you can support your child as they are using them.

JiTap

JiTap is a program that can be used on a computer, iPad, or phone. It supports Hebrew language learning and Jewish holidays with games, songs and other activities. Every week, new games are assigned to support what is being learned in class. Use your child’s OJCS account when logging in; the passwords are either kaojcs or kbojcs, depending on your child’s class.

Boukili

Boukili is a French reading app that allows your kids to read books online or to be read to in French. As they read books, they earn points and rewards like games and outfits for their avatar. This program is mainly for practice at home and is not necessarily assigned by Madame Sophie.

Flipgrid

Flipgrid is a platform where students can record short videos of themselves answering a prompt. It is a great way for them to demonstrate their oral language skills. To log in, use your child’s class code flipgrid.com/kaojcs or flipgrid.com/kbojcs followed by your child’s school email and password. Use of Flipgrid will either be assigned in class or via the distance learning schedule where the code for specific assignments are posted, eg: https://flipgrid.com/688f36cd.

Classkick

Classkick is a site that allows your child to work online while receiving live support from their teacher. You may see it referenced on our distance learning schedule. To login, select “sign in with Google” and ensure that you are using your child’s ojcs email and password.
