On International Dot Day, SK Made Their Mark

On September 15, 2022, the kids in SK celebrated International Dot Day!!!  If you’re not sure what International Dot Day is all about, here’s a little explanation:

September 15th marks the anniversary of the publication of best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds’ The Dot, a “story book for all ages.”

Starting in 2009, a group of educators began celebrating this date as International Dot Day — a day for classes to explore the story’s powerful themes: bravery, creativity, and self-expression.

The Dot tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Peter’s book, the teacher dares a very resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Encouraged by her teacher she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, letting her creativity bloom and, ultimately, inspire others.

from The Educator’s Handbook for International Dot Day

To mark this special day yesterday, after reading the book, the kids got to explore their own creativity by making their own unique dot.  They experimented with colour mixing by using markers on coffee filters and then spraying them with water at the Saturation Station.  They also drew their own special masterpieces to make their mark.  We listened to and watched a video of the “The Dot Song” written by Emily Arrow and Peter H. Reynolds…. you can watch the video and do the actions at home here.

The school year may have just begun, but the kids in Senior Kindergarten have already made their mark in a big way!!  Check out the pictures below and then keep scrolling for some important upcoming dates!!!

Chag Pesach Sameach

שִׂמְחָה רַבָּה, שִׂמְחָה רַבָּה
!אָבִיב הִגִּיעַ, פֶּסַח בָּהּ

SK has had so much fun getting ready for Pesach!! From learning songs and the Mah Nishtana to putting together their very own Haggadot, from reading so many stories and making Seder plates with Miss Tashi, we have been truly blown away by all they have learned about this chag!  This was so evident yesterday during our Model Seder and we hope you’ll see the same at home for the real ones.  Along with JK, we spent yesterday afternoon celebrating with plastic locusts, styrofoam-ball hail, stickers as boils, jumping like frogs, darkness, crossing the Red Sea, and more. Check out the photos below to catch a glimpse of the fun we had…..

Wishing you and your families a Chag Pesach Sameach and a lovely break! We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on April 25!

Winter Fun Day – Important Info!!

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 3rd is our (rescheduled) Winter Fun Day at OJCS!! Woohoo!!

We are looking forward to a fantastic fun-filled day, but we wanted to let you know about of a few important things….

Please ensure that your child is dressed warmly!! Students do not need to wear uniforms – comfy, cozy clothes are encouraged (long-johns, ski socks, lots of layers, etc.).   We highly recommend sending an extra set of clothes to school as it is likely they will need to change.  We will be spending most of the morning outside and the forecast for tomorrow will be chilly, so please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately.

Drop-off tomorrow will be at the front door between 8:30 and 8:45; the kids will come in, drop off their stuff, use the bathroom and then get bundled up for our first block outside at 9:00.

In lieu of a movie afternoon (as advertised on the poster), SK will be celebrating 100 Day in the afternoon…. it will be an extraordinary day indeed!

Also, a friendly reminder that dismissal this Friday, March 4th is at 3:00 pm.

Introducing IXL

IXL Online Math Forum

IXL is an online forum that provides diagnostics of learning skills, promotes review, mastery and extensions of skills through practice, as well as providing students, teachers, and parents valuable information on student’s progress through grade data points.  We have just introduced IXL in the classroom and there will be a handout in your child’s backpack today that explains how to log in with your child’s login and password; if you need a reminder or have not received the handout, please contact Morah Andrea.  We will continue to use this program in class, but practice time at home is also encouraged! For a more in-depth tutorial on how to set up the program for your child as well as highlights of the program, check out these blog posts from our Math specialist, Mrs. Cleveland:

Happy Chanukah from SK!

It is has been a great few weeks celebrating Chanukah in Kindergarten!! From singing, dancing, eating yummy treats, and getting crafty, to practicing the brachot, Dreidel math and learning Chanukah vocabulary words in French & Hebrew, there has been tons of ruach-filled fun in our class!! Check out our Chanukah picture gallery below.  In case you missed the SK performance during last Thursday’s school-wide Chanukah Showcase, you can watch it (and the rest of the classes too) here:

We hope you all had a fantastic holiday with your families and we just wanted say thank you for the very generous Bayshore gift cards we received!!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be taking place this Thursday, Dec. 9 and Friday, Dec. 10.  Dismissal on Thursday is at 2:00 pm and there is NO SCHOOL on Friday.

Now that the snow has officially arrived, we thought we should clarify our Outdoor Play plan for the winter months.  If it is colder than -20 (with or without the windchill), we will not be playing outdoors. We will be using the Weather Network to determine the temperature.  As with rainy days, if there is no one on the playground at 8:30, please bring your child to drop-off at the front door.  While we will strive to get outside as much as possible, we will take advantage of the gym or other indoor physical activities when the weather is not cooperating.

Have a great week!
