Friday Check-In

Shabbat Shalom Everyone!

At this time everyone from the Kindergarten Team would like to thank-you for all of your very hard work in making Distant Learning at the OJCS such a great experience for your children. It takes all of us together, to make this work.  We are working hard at finding a balance as we begin next week. We will basically be following the same format. We have tried to balance the right amount of live meets a day, the right amount of work to do, the right amount of down time, and of course being the age of your children, the right amount of play.  Our schedule says when the subject is taught and when the live meets will be.  Whatever work you need to be prepared for, or printed, will be put up the night before. Remember please.. if you feel at anytime that it is too much to do, take a break, and go back when you can.

Next week, on Tuesday, we will be having a Virtual Birthday party for Jacob H.  If you can have a little snack ready for the end of the day we will have a party together. Jacob has asked the children to have a joke ready. Sounds like a funny party!

Shabbat Shalom

Distant Learning in Kindergarten

Just wanted to have a quick Check-in. Thank you parents for all the support and time you are giving to your children . I have noticed the most important part of what we are doing at the OJCS is the meet time and seeing one another . In these times we are missing our friends who at the OJCS  are like our family . I would like to share  a post I saw on my Kindergarten network which is how I feel.

A quick note to our Families:

Starting tomorrow, every Tuesday and Thursday Parsha and Pancakes will take on new meaning.
Dr. Marcovitz will be hosting, Dr. Avi’s Neighborhood.  There will be many similarities (of course he will include aspects of the Parsha).  The idea  parents, while you are trying to get ready, students can watch, I hope a somewhat engaging, educational and fun show.

Trail Mix Math for Tomorrow!

Math Class for tomorrow on Measurement:

I would love to experiment doing this math activity tomorrow on our morning Google meet. Not sure how it will go but it’s worth a try.  That does require getting a few materials ready for the morning meet. (Easy stuff) I’m hoping by sending this out now, the stress is off for you. I’m sure you have better ingredients in your house than I have in mine. We don’t meet until 9:15 so hopefully you’re ok with this.

Here’s what you need:

Just checking in!

Hi Everyone! Just a quick check-in.  What a great music class we had with Mr. G. As we continue on this journey we are learning new things everyday. We hope everyone is healthy and managing in the best way that they can.Our favourite time, I can tell is when we go live, however, for some, we realize this may be difficult to do, more than we are. Things to think of. I will be preparing one document that will have some sites for you to use for when you need them ,or have extra time. They will be in groups of Math, Literacy, Science, and Physical movement. Shira has posted some Hebrew sites on the blog, but we can work on adding this to the one document.  For the Kindergarten Class..you are the Heroes…helping them to navigate all of the distance learning.  Thank-you! It’s been brought to my attention that the site Reading site Vooks   wants to charge. I assumed ,since I as a teacher was given access for free, that you would too. There will be other free sites to use that will serve the same purpose. For now please note that Teach Your Monster To Read is free for a few more days. This is one the children are familiar with and it’s an excellent reading site.  Remember to get some exercise and fresh air! See you all soon!

Virtual Kindergarten Teaching

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Welcome to the blogpost for our virtual classroom information.  As we navigate through this together, we want you to know that we are all doing this for the first time.  However we are very well prepared due to our past two years of training at OJCS.  Please use the comment part of the blog to provide any feedback that you may have.  As you use our class schedule you may choose to complete different activities at different times and the our schedule has been designed accordingly.  We are aware that considering the age of your children, not all of the various activities may be completed, however having some structure will be great for everyone.  All of this will begin on Wednesday March 18th as we begin our soft launch.

Make sure that your children still go outdoors for fresh air, to keep them healthy and moving .

Our suggestion is to keep all of your children’s work, be it a drawing, an activity from a website, etc. in a folder and we will talk about it when we all return.  Another option is to take a picture and we can share this on Google Meet or whatever virtual way we find works best.

Thanks for all your support in advance.

Your Kindergarten Team.

Here is week one  March 18th-March 20th

Math:

Here is a unit on addition.

I suggest about 15 – 20 minutes out of the block to practice this unit on math.  If Khan Academy works well for you I will post the next unit next week. Please feel free to choose larger or smaller numbers to work with. It starts as basic as up to 5 and goes up to double digit. Starting at an easier level will at least help you learn how to navigate this program.   Start with the lesson that will teach the class to you. Then complete the practice. Differentiation  is the beauty of this program.

For those who wish there is an app called Khan Academy for Kids which is child friendly and fun to do.

You will see highlighted links to Google Hangouts Meet at specific times during the day. These are all linked to your child’s google account (firstname.surname@theojcs.ca). We will be trying to do this with both classes at the same time to help families with more than one child at home. You will be receiving an online tutorial on how to use Google Hangouts Meet by later today or early tomorrow.

Below the Activity portions there are also highlighted links for Flipgrid, Slides, PDFs and other activities. These are where you will find what your child requires for the day. If printing is required for a specific activity, you may want to do it prior to the start of our day.

If and when you have questions throughout the “school day” you are encouraged to contact us via Google Hangouts, which is open when you are on your child’s OJCS email Homepage. It is located on the left or right side of your screen. To begin a live chat:

          1. Click on the plus symbol
          2. Enter teacher’s first name or email
          3. Choose the correct person from the dropdown menu and a new chat window will open.
          4. You can now begin to type, or press the video icon to begin a video chat.

Finally, we will be keeping the Parent Teacher Conferences as scheduled, using the above Google Hangouts method, so please be sure you are in your child’s account. If you do not remember your child’s password please contact us via email.

This week and Next.. So much!

What a great busy week in Kindergarten! On Tuesday we had a an author visit via Skype from Chana Stiefel. Thanks to Staci Kenter for helping to organize this for the children. We had the opportunity to read her book in class as well as listen to Chana herself read it to us. The book she read  is called -My name is Wakawakaloch!

I’ve added a few pics to show some of the word work and writing activities that happens. Some children have begun to do research on different Sea Creatures as we we continue our Under the Sea Inquiry.

Today the class created their Projects for Innovation Day. We were very excited to use The Makerspace in our school for the very first time. If you can drop by tomorrow at 8:45 to see what we made for The Three little Pigs houses we can share our houses and how we built them.

For Ruach week,  Wednesday is Class Theme Day. Our class chose the theme of Disney Characters. As you can see there are so many choices! As well ,for Friday, Pyjama Day, we will be donating pyjamas to children who are in need, so if you can, please bring in a child’s new pair of pajamas that would be greatly appreciated.! On Tuesday, we will be attending the Ganon’s Purim Carnival .

Looks like a really fun week ahead!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to what sounds like a great Winter Break! As you can see the children were very happy to be back and with their friends. Our outdoor play today was a perfect authentic science class. The snow has begun to melt and the discussion of evaporation and what happens to ice when the weather gets warmer was amazing to listen to.

Just a few reminders for you:

Tomorrow is the beginning of the Jewish month of Adar. There is a phrase, “as the month of Adar enters we should be happy.
Tomorrow our class will be participating in a Rosh Chodesh Assembly, where our choir will be singing the song by Pharrell, Happy.
On Wednesday, Feb.26 the Kindergarten – Grade 2 children are invited to a Parsha and Pancakes s at 8:00 downstairs in our makerspace. Please click on the following link for more information.
One last reminder. Our School Wide Innovation Day will be held on March 5th from 8:45-9:25. The children in Kindergarten will be working on a S.T.E.M project that we will be making in class. If you are unable to make it, we will be sure to take pictures and/or videos to share. This will be a group project that the children will be working on together.  More information to follow.
