Flipgrid at Home – Update!

The Kindergartens have officially caught Flipgrid fever – there has been a lot of talk and excitement at school about how much the students love sharing their favourite story books at home, as well as watching their classmate’s videos.

Here are a couple of great examples of students sharing their favourite stories!

One more thing:

In order to up the privacy on Flipgrid (I’ve had a few parents approach me about the subject),  I’ve changed the settings so that only those with an @theojcs.ca (teachers and students) email address can access the grid. Many of you signed into Flipgrid using your own email account, however, the generic Kindergarten Email/Password will need to be used from now on. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions:    l.vlajkov@theojcs.ca

Keep up the good work parents and students !

Flipgrid at Home !

Hello Kindergarten Parents!

As most of you may have heard/seen by now from previous blog posts, the students have completed a few activities in class using a computer application called, Flipgrid.

A few of the students have expressed interest in using Flipgrid for activities at home as well, as they often use their Ipads/Laptops for educational activities.

In response to this, I’ve created a Flipgrid called, “Books I’m Reading at Home”.

With your assistance, students can sign into Flipgrid using the information provided below. They can then enter the Flipcode to open the, “Books I’m Reading at Home” grid, and record grid videos about some of their favourite stories.

Go to:      https://flipgrid.com/
Enter Flipcode:   ojcskindergarten
Select: Login with Google
Enter: Email – flipgridkindergarten@theojcs.ca
Password – flipgrid4k

Select: “Books I’m Reading at Home” grid

Tap to Record (the green icon at the bottom of the grid)

Record a video about your favourite book to share with your classmates!

Here are some of the questions I have posted to help the Kindergartens talk about their favourite books once they have finished reading:

1. What was your favourite part of the story and why?
2. Are you like any of the characters in this book?
3. If you were the author how would you change the story?

Once students have posted their vidoes, other students in our K1 and K2 classes can view their classmate’s videos to see what their favourite books are, hopefully inspiring them to read these books as well!

I’m hoping this activity will build on student comprehension, as well as make reading interactive and fun for each and every student!

Guided Relaxation in Kindergarten

This guided relaxation video has become very popular amongst the Kindergartens!

There are many guided relaxation/meditation videos and scripts available for kids – Teaching kids mindfulness can help them fend off negative thoughts and behaviors; build self-confidence, attentiveness, and self-control; and even learn to treat others and themselves with respect. Try it at home!

An Introduction to Flipgrid in K1 and K2

IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, IMPROVE

This week in K1 and K2, we explored the video discussion platform, Flipgrid. Teachers pose topics/questions, and students respond using short videos in a grid-style format.

Although this was only an introduction to Flipgrid, we’ll be utilizing this platform in our classroom in numerous ways to enhance student learning within their own classrooms, as well as by connecting with students locally, nationally, globally…the possibilities are endless!

As a class, we read the story, “Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!” Following this, in groups of 3/4, students developed a plan to design a structure using various materials to help Mr. McGreely keep the bunnies from entering his vegetable garden to Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! all his delicious vegetables!

Next week, we’ll be watching the videos together as a class and having a discussion about what went well, what we struggled with, and how we could improve our structures to better assist Mr. McGreely.

The students demonstrated teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
